The Price of Life

The Price of Life

two round gold-colored coins
I bargained with life for a penny,

But life would pay no more.

However I begged at evening,

When I counted my scanty store.

For life is just a loan.

It will give you whatever you ask.

But, once you set the wages,

Then you must bear the task.

I lived for a menial’s hire,

Only to learn, dismayed,

That any wage I had asked of life,

Ife would have willingly paid.

Written in my early teens and – I’m sorry – but I don’t have a clue what it means – that’s what I call – good poetry – make your own mind up.

My best guess –

life isn’t a loan – 0r any sort of financial arrangement – you get it for free – and whatever you get out of it, is entirely up to your efforts.

I was probably only 13 !
