Good Samaritan No.1

From my mate Jean

Whilst I was in-line at the checkout in a large supermarket (which begins with ‘A’), an old lady in front of me (well, I say ‘old’, she was about the same age as me, but the demeanour was old) got into a panic rummaging about in her handbag and failing to find her purse. Very quietly and without fuss the checkout operator got out of his seat, walked round to the card reader, fished his bank card out of his pocket and paid for her shopping. (£36) She was overwhelmed.

He then found her purse at the bottom of her bag and put it back, safely in a zip pocket – making sure she knew where it was.

Mad Woman
I burst into tears – proper sobs – but the people behind me hadn’t seen what was going on, so they looked at me like I was a mad-woman.

What a lovely man.

Good Samaritan No.2

At my previous shop, a few days earlier – in another branch of the same chain, the checkout operator’s weighing-scale was faulty, so she gathered all my loose veg, shoved it through and said, ‘Here you can just have it’.

Nice to have your faith in human nature, restored, now and again.
