Second Thoughts – School Crisis

brown and white concrete building

They’re all coming out from under stones – justifying / defending their decision.

Current repeated claim – seems to be – ‘there were three different collapses in July, in buildings not defined as ‘critical’. and we had to react quickly’.

Quickly?   Just three days  notice– some schools, just one day – before the start of the new term.

and,

Why wait for the third collapse?

and

Rishi Sunak says –

“It is utterly wrong to blame me for the government’s failure to fix crumbling concrete in England’s schools.”

following an accusation -which he denied – that he approved cuts to rebuilding programs when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Fact – he cut the promised School Rebuilding Programme –

– to build or renovate, 100 new schools per year to 50 per year –

In fact – 400 units had been identified as needing urgent attention –

I have found it impossible to find any official figures on how many have actually had the work done – and I am an experienced online researcher.

And – would you believe – they are turning on each other!

As reported in my previous post – Gillian Keegan, the Education Secretary, has, in a live TV broadcast, referring to other Parliamentary colleagues i.e. Conservatives – “as everyone else has sat on their arses and done nothing.”

and – leave it to Labour –

Labour’s Ben Bradshaw implies Sunak would have taken the RAAC problem more seriously if his children attended state schools.
